Tono

I haven't brought all of my pictures from Japan, but some are in my portable memory disc.  I'd like to introduce my memory of the family overnight trip to Tono, Iwate in 2008 with some pictures.

Tono is famous for old folk tales of the area; Tales of Tono, which is now considered one of the greatest studies of Japanese folklore. They have been told from generation to generation. Some of tales involve the mythical mischievous water creature and has a dish on its head; Kappa. Like the story that Nessie may live in the Loch Ness, this creature is also wrapped in mystery. A legendary location is the Kappa-buchi, where is said kappas live in this water stream. It is no wonder that a kappa lives here, isn't it?

Tono is surrounded by rich nature and has a fantastic folkloric atmosphere. There are still many ordinary houses and buildings throughout the area. You can learn Japanese old life as well. The Tono City Museum is also nice. It's not such a big facility but is full of local history like a treasure box.

Denshoen

We ate one of Iwate's local cuisines for lunch; hittumi at the restaurant Denshoen. It's like a flat noodles made of flour. The soup is a checken broth with a touch of soy sauce, and other ingredians like vegetables, mushroom etc. give the soup an added richness. A combination of noodles and soup are perfect! Yummy... Since then,  we occasionally had cooked hittumi at home:)

It was June, after the rice planting.

We also went to Takamuro Suikouen. It's a hot spring facility, but you can also enjoy to see a Japanese garden and old buildings.

This is Chiba Family Magariya. Magariya is a classic type of farmhouse famous with unique construction. The residence is connected to the horse barn, and seen form above, the building has an L shape. It made people to watch their hourses easier. This building was constructed nearly 200 years ago. It is one of the large-scale types of Magariya. According to records, a total of 25 people, including family and servants, lived in the house with 20 horses. They were such a rich family!

Finally, we went to Koiwai Farm and had lunch and dessert:) The cheese cake was so thick and rich! It was delicious!

Our travel was before the earthquake, and have heard there was enormous damage. I don't know how the city has recovered from the disaster. I always wish for Japan's recovery...
