Visiting The Seven Lucky Gods

We visited the Seven Lucky Gods (Shichi Fukujin) in Nihonbashi. They are from Japanese mythology and folklore, originating from the late Muromachi Era (1336-1573). They are often depicted on their treasure ship. Each has a traditional attribute:

  1. Ebisu; god of fishers or merchants, often depicted carrying a sea bream.
  2. Jurōjin; god of long life.
  3. Benzaiten (Benten-sama); goddess of water and also knowledge, art and beauty and music.
  4. Bishamonten; god of warriors.
  5. Daikokuten (Daikoku); god of wealth, commerce and trade.
  6. Hotei; the fat and happy god of abundance and good health.
  7. Fukurokujyu; god of happiness, wealth and longevity.

The tradition holds that seven gods will arrive in town on the New Year and distribute fantastic gifts to worthy people:). After visiting each shrine, I feel that a good time is coming:)
