Tomb of Masakado

We visited a fascinating tomb of a samurai from the Heian period (794-1185). His name was Taira no Masakado, who led a rebellion against the central government of Kyoto. Why is this tomb fascinating? Because it is called 'kubizuka', the grave of the head. Literally, it is believed that his head is buried. His tomb is located in the office area in Tokyo, surrounded by tall buildings.

Actually, it is said that he was caught and killed in Kyoto, and his head was hung for display outside for a while. According to legend, his head flew away on its own to the current Tokyo, and it was buried there.
It is said that if you treat the grave without due respect, his spirit causes natural disasters and other misfortunes. Hence, the grave has kept well today.
